An updated Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document for the Common Program Requirements is accessible under Additional Resources on the Common Program Requirements page of the ACGME website.
To facilitate review of the Resident/Fellow and Faculty Survey reports, crosswalk documents listing the applicable Common Program Requirement(s) corresponding with each item on the survey reports are available on the ACGME website in the Documents and Resources section for each specialty, on the Institutional Documents and Resources page, and on the Resident/Fellow and Faculty Surveys page.
Every 10 years, Review Committees are required to review their specialty-specific Program Requirements to determine necessary revisions. The ACGME Board of Directors has approved a new process for all such major revisions going forward.
The process convenes specialty-specific writing groups, who, along with members of the specialty community and leaders from other specialties and related fields, rigorously and creatively consider what the specialty will look like in the future (recognizing that the future is marked with significant uncertainty). Out of this process, the writing group drafts and proposes revisions to the Program Requirements that will prepare learners for current and future practice.
The following writing group requests feedback. The scenario-based planning Summary of Themes and Insights is posted for review and comment here. Submit comments using the electronic Review and Comment Form.

Features of Effective Clinical Competency Committees
Kathleen Rowland, MD, MS; Deborah Edberg, MD; Lauren Anderson, PhD, MEd; Katherine Wright, PhD, MPH
This study was conducted as part of the 2022 Council of Academic Family Medicine Educational Research Alliance survey of family medicine residency program directors. The survey assessed Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) methods, policies, faculty development, structure, and overall CCC time required. Findings suggest that formal policies, faculty development, and adequate time for CCC faculty members are associated with an effective CCC, especially if goals beyond “identifying failure” are desired.
Excellent vs Excessive: Helping Trainees Balance Performance and Perfectionism
Kay M. Johnson, MD, MPH; Stuart J. Slavin, MD; Traci A. Takahashi, MD, MPH
Medical educators should learn to recognize maladaptive perfectionism, avoid reinforcing it, and encourage self-awareness. By providing feedback that both normalizes maladaptive perfectionism as an occupational hazard and broadens insight into the costs versus benefits of perfectionism, faculty members may help affected learners use their time and energy more productively, improving their mental health and career satisfaction.
